Pierce Butler Scholarship

The Pierce Butler Scholarship will be awarded annually to undergraduate males of the University of Minnesota who exemplify being men of character, integrity, and honor. Pierce Butler was a Phi Kappa Psi at Carleton College, whose members moved their Chapter and founded Minnesota Beta. Butler later served as a University of Minnesota Regent, and was the first Minnesotan to serve on the United States Supreme Court from 1922 until his death in 1939.

With college costs continuing to increase faster than family incomes, it is increasingly important that individuals and organizations establish new scholarships. The Minnesota Beta Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi is fortunate to have established a scholarship program that will help generations of young men at the University of Minnesota.

The Pierce Butler Scholarship is comprised of 7 different scholarships. Minnesota Beta recognizes excellence in the classroom and the community for incoming freshman men to the University of Minnesota. This scholarship is designed to promote academic excellence among a new generation of Golden Gophers while stewarding a positive campus atmosphere. By applying for the Pierce Butler Scholarship, you are not required or committed to joining the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

Recipients of the scholarship will be chosen based on merit in the classroom and in the community. Once an application is received, the name of the applicant will not be known to those reviewing the application until the interview phase to prevent potential favoring and nepotism. A panel of alumni and undergraduates from Minnesota Beta will come together to review all applications and narrow the candidates down to an interview phase after the initial application phase. The panel will conduct interviews of qualified candidates during the summer before their freshman year. Once all candidate interviews are completed, the five awardees will be chosen based on both the application and the applicant's interview. A scholarship ceremony will occur after the winners have been chosen in which recipients are invited to the Chapter house for an awards presentation.

The awards shall be given out as a one-time gift and deposited into the recipient's student account in the fall of the award recipient’s first semester at the University of Minnesota.

IMPORTANT: The updated Pierce Butler Scholarship application deadline is August 21st, 2023.
