Honoring a Legacy

Minnesota Beta's John T. and Jack W. Barber Chapter Scholarship

Minnesota Beta is proud to celebrate a gift that exemplifies the spirit of brotherhood, leadership, and lifelong impact. The establishment of the MN Beta (John T. and Jack W. Barber) Chapter Scholarship at the Phi Kappa Psi Foundation celebrates a multigenerational legacy while providing multigenerational impact.

Proposed as part of a $1 million commitment from Brother John Barber UMN Twin Cities ’79, the $450,000 endowed scholarship honors his father, John “Jack” W. Barber Iowa State ’47, a man whose life reflected an unwavering belief in the power of education, leadership, and service to others. This enduring tribute carries forward the values that shaped two generations of Phi Psi brothers and ensures those same ideals continue to guide future leaders for decades to come.

The MN Beta (John T. and Jack W. Barber) Chapter Scholarship is designed to support students from the Minnesota Beta Chapter, providing financial relief that allows them to focus on academics, leadership, and service rather than the burden of tuition debt. Each award will do more than fund an education; it will offer freedom, opportunity, and encouragement to strive for excellence.

The scholarship’s impact will multiply over time. With an annual distribution of ~4.5 percent, the fund is projected to award more than $87,000 in scholarships within its first decade. As investment earnings grow, so too will its reach, empowering even more students to achieve their dreams and continue Phi Psi’s proud tradition of leadership, integrity, and service.

Yet the significance of this scholarship extends far beyond financial aid. Each recipient will carry forward the values the Barbers embodied: a commitment to learning, a drive to serve, and a belief in leaving the world better than they found it. In this way, the scholarship becomes more than a fund; it becomes a living reflection of character, mentorship, and fraternity.

Through the creation of the MN Beta (John T. and Jack W. Barber) Chapter Scholarship, the Barber family’s name will forever be linked to the ideals of education and brotherhood that define Phi Kappa Psi. It stands as a shining example of how one family’s generosity can inspire generations, transform lives, and strengthen the bonds that unite our Fraternity. It also reflects the spirit of the Phi Kappa Psi Creed, reminding us to always be ready to help a brother in any need.
