Pumpkin Carving

Annual Philanthropy Event Honors Dr. Leonard’s Legacy

On October 19th, Minnesota Beta held its annual Pumpkin Carving philanthropy event. This year’s event was a tremendous success, bringing in new guests and expanding our outreach across campus. We saw a noticeable increase in community engagement, including participation from families and University of Minnesota students outside of the Fraternity.

This success would not have been possible without the leadership of our Head Philanthropy Chairman, Ethan Donnelly ’24, and Vice Chairman, Jack Empkey ’25. We are also grateful for the support of our major sponsors, including Fieldhouse Dinkytown Apartments, Raising Cane’s, and the Kollege Klub. Their contributions, along with donations from others, allowed us to offer an exciting raffle lineup featuring speakers, sweatshirts, gift cards, and even a 65” TV generously donated by our chapter advisor, Andrew Zobel ’14. These donations directly support our ability to make a meaningful contribution to Dr. Leonard’s Cancer Research Fund year after year.

Thanks to the strong turnout and a generous price match from Hubbard Broadcasting Inc., we were able to donate over $12,000 to the foundation this year. Being able to contribute to a cause that impacts so many people continues to motivate us and fuels our passion for this event. Minnesota Beta has partnered with Dr. Leonard’s Cancer Research Fund for many years, and this long-standing relationship has allowed our undergraduates to connect with those who help run and support the foundation.

This year’s event carried special weight, as we honored the legacy of Dr. Leonard, who passed away last fall. Knowing that we played a role in helping raise over $11 million for the foundation is something that will remain deeply meaningful to all Minnesota Betas who have been part of this beloved tradition.

With increased attendance from the community, it was powerful to share our chapter’s impact and Dr. Leonard’s story with new guests who were previously unaware of the foundation. Minnesota Beta plans to continue supporting this cause for years to come, long after today’s active members have graduated.

Following a reflection on this year’s event, our chapter has already begun securing new sponsors and raffle items for next fall. We look forward to continuing our positive impact on the community during our spring philanthropy event, Mini Masters, and beyond.
